FOR VETERANS. BY VETERANS.

DEDICATED TO SERVICE FOR OVER A CENTURY

VFW Ole Beck Post 209 was chartered in Missoula, Montana in 1921. For over a century we’ve served Veterans, military families, and this community through benefits navigation, peer support, emergency assistance, and ceremonial honors, all delivered by Veterans, for Veterans.

We’re in the middle of the biggest transformation in our history. Post 209 is converting from a traditional VFW bar with gambling into a Veteran Gym and Resource Center. It’s a shift from a place Veterans visit to a place Veterans build their lives around. Fitness, resilience, purpose, family, and each other, all under one roof, open to every Veteran.

That vision now has federal backing. The Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded Post 209 $688,608 through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP) to launch the VFW Healthy Veteran Initiative (VFW-HVI). This funding brings dedicated full-time staff and expanded programming focused on Veteran wellness, connection, and suicide prevention.

Missoula County is home to nearly 10,000 Veterans, and too few Veteran-centered spaces exist where connection happens naturally, outside a bar or a clinical setting.

Our membership chose to build something healthier in its place. Not a bar stool, but a model of Veteran community grounded in health, purpose, and family. Here is what we’re building.

Strength and Conditioning: CrossFit, functional training, longevity-focused movement, and all-abilities classes.

Inner Strength Program: yoga, qigong, mindfulness, and meditation, delivered through community partners like Red Willow Learning Center.

Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching practical nutrition guidance and coaching that helps Veterans build healthy habits that last

Veteran-led Outdoor Adventures: backcountry hiking, camping, and rafting expeditions, delivered through community partners like the Montana Vet Program.

A Veteran resource center offering benefits navigation, claims support, peer support and suicide prevention outreach, emergency financial assistance, and referrals for housing, legal, education, and employment.
